Why create an LGBTQ+ Podcast?

The goal of this podcast is to enable listeners to better understand the LGBTQ+ community, through a judgement-free platform that will discuss and debate areas of uncertainty among the audience. Queer Talk will promote healthy discussions of topics regarding the LGBTQ+ community that would otherwise seem taboo, such as sexuality, gender, romantic orientation and what life is like as a queer student in university.

Why is this important?

According to the Mental Health Foundation, members of the LGBTQ community are more likely to experience a range of mental health problems such as depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and alcohol and substance misuse. This can be attributed to a range of factors such as discrimination, isolation and homophobia.

As reported by LGBT in Britain - Hate Crime (2017), one in five LGBT people (21%) have experienced a hate crime or incident due to their sexual orientation or gender identity or both in the last 12 months. Additionally, two in five trans people (41%) have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their gender identity in the last 12 months.

Data taken from Unhealthy Attitudes (2015) and The RaRE Research Report (2015) shows that in 2015, nearly half (48%) of trans people under the age of 26 said they had attempted suicide, 30% said they had attempted suicide in the past year, while 59% of trans people under 26 said they had considered suicide as an option.

This evidence alone is proof that much of UK society is not treating the LGBTQ community with the tolerance and respect that is deserved. The best way to tackle this kind of discrimination and abuse is to educate, which is where Queer Talk comes into play.
